🇨🇳🇺🇸 Six years after Donald Trump first implemented tariffs on Chinese goods, President Joe Biden has introduced even more severe tariffs. The tariffs focis on a variety of Chinese imports, including a jump from 25% to 100% on electric vehicles, aiming to protect emerging American industries like semiconductor and EV manufacturing. 🏭 Oh, the pollution of AI. Microsoft's annual sustainability report reveals a nearly 30% increase in total carbon emissions since 2020, primarily due to the construction of new data centers. While the company has reduced its direct Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 6.3% during this period, the indirect emissions from activities such as the production of building materials and hardware for data centers have surged by 30.9%. 💻 Drama? In OpenAI? No way! Well, Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and chief scientist of the AI giant, has announced his departure from the company after nearly a decade. This follows a turbulent period at OpenAI, which included his initial support for the removal of co-founder Sam Altman as CEO, a decision that was reversed after a significant backlash from the staff. 🇦🇪 The UAE is growing in the world of investments. Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Investment Co. invested $24.2 billion last year in sectors including private credit and AI, boosting its assets under management by 9.5%. Key moves included investments in data centers and partnerships with G42, aligning with the emirate's push into technology and AI. (Bloomberg)
🇨🇳 The world is becoming increasingly skeptical about China. On the one hand, Germany is close to banning Chinese critical components from its 5G core network by 2026, with support from the interior, foreign, and economy ministries, despite resistance from the digital ministry. On the other hand, the U.S government is closely monitoring Chinese vehicle manufacturers' activities in Mexico as they may be establishing new factories to enter the U.S automotive market. The Biden Administration is considering ways to thwart these companies if they aim to dodge tariffs. (Bloomberg)
🎧 Oh Meta, will you ever abandon wearables? The company is venturing into AI-powered earphones with cameras, as reported by The Information. This is part of a wider industry trend where numerous companies, including startups and conglomerates, are focusing on AI-based wearables. Meta's device, currently under the "Camerabuds" project, is expected to recognize objects and translate foreign languages. (Reuters)
🤝 And speaking of AI, OpenAI has officially partnered with Reddit to use its data for training AI models. This collaboration gives OpenAI access to Reddit's posts and replies, enhancing the content available to its tools like ChatGPT. Additionally, OpenAI will help bring new AI-powered features to Reddit users and moderators and become a Reddit advertising partner. (Reuters)
🇪🇺 Roses are red, violets are blue. The EU is now going after Microsoft too. EU legislators have warned Microsoft that the tech giant could be fined up to 1% of its global annual turnover, for failing to provide information about the risk of its generative AI tools. The company now has until May 27 to supply the requested data or risk getting fined. (Techcrunch)
🥊 And the AI algorithms keep on battling it out. Both OpenAI and Google have announced new AI assistants: GPT-4o and Gemini Live. While GPT-4o offers real-time conversation, visual analysis, and coding help, Gemini Live, provides similar capabilities and plans to integrate live video communication. (Technology Review)
📈 In a surprising move, billionaire Elon Musk is intensifying efforts in China to boost Tesla's autonomous driving capabilities through a new partnership with Baidu. All this during a recent trip to Beijing where he followed on a deal with Baidu to develop robotaxis.(Business Insider)
🕊️ Seven VC firms launched the Diversity Data Alliance to standardize the way they collect and report demographic data. More organizations are welcome to join the alliance. Uniformly collecting this data is the first step towards seeing more diverse representations of founders receiving VC funding. (Techcrunch)
